HD-DVD key and my thoughts on digg.com

I'm assuming most of my readers have already heard about the HD-DVD key but for those of you that haven't, an HD-DVD processing key has been found that will unlock any HD-DVD to date. This is cool because before the discovery of this key, HD-DVD decrypters were using specific keys for each DVD title. Now there is one universal key that all players, no matter the operating system, can use. Yes it's cool that Linux will now be able to play some HD-DVDS but that's not what i want to focus on in this article. My main concern is censorship, and not what you are thinking. Not the MPAA trying to stop the spread of this key (that is their job), my problem is with digg.com. digg.com is a user submitted news site that allows users to vote on which articles are important and you can imagine how popular this news about the HD-DVD key would be. Multiple articles have been created in reference to this news but each time digg.com kills them. How can we trust the results of digg.com's voting system if they are altered? Digg's new message: "What is Digg? Digg is a user driven social content website - except for when we decide to take the wheel and drive the fucking car!" I understand that there is pressure from the MPAA to remove these articles but digg.com should take a cue from reddit.com. As of right now, reddit.com still has the HD-DVD key news article sitting at the number two spot. I would like to see a response from digg.com for their actions. I may be one small voice in the digg community but i believed that there were certain values that we, for the most part, as a community shared. First and foremost being the free exchange of information and i believe digg.com has went against these ideals. In order to keep my article alive on digg i have removed the actual key.

The oligarchy scrambles once again to silence those who discover that digg is not what it says it is by a long shot.

Translation: digg and its little diggtards suck.

Wired News has had an article and the passkey up for over two months now.
Digg that article
Don't give in to censorship

I dugg all those HD-DVD articles, and posted comments to many. Some of those comments included links to other Digg submissions on the same subject. I did not make any submissions of my own, neither did I post the "offending" encryption key. One post suggested that, as protest, everyone should bury everything. I suggested a couple of times that Digg was operating out of fear, and not out of legal requirement, based on the fact that Reddit still has the key up, and Wired published an article on Feb 13, 2007, with the key, and that is still up. I used no foul language at any time.

My account has been disabled for misuse. I have a short "Why?" letter in to support@digg.com.

That is ridiculous that digg has resorted to account disabling. Here is an article from someone who had their account disabled. How I Got Banned

Yes, it sucks that Digg has been censoring content, but I can understand why in this case.

It's because most of their user base (hereafter referred to as "diggtards", since I like that word) are blithering idiots.

Today I logged into my reader and had 100+ unread articles, 90% of which were digg. Of all the digg articles, 90% were "here's the HD-DVD key" articles.

Why did diggtards vote up so many articles? WE GET THE POINT! Digg admins had to filter some of it out to keep from spamming all their feed readers.

...but it turns out the admins are blithering idiots too. Their censorship only made it worse because the diggtards took that as a cue to digg up every article containing the key in hopes that some of them wouldn't be filtered. Since the diggtards far outnumbered the idiot admins, the 'tards won.

Reddit, on the other hand, had only a few articles on their feed regarding the key. Why is that?

I like to think it's because reddit users aren't blithering idiots.

Hi, I'm Aywwts4 (Dont know if you saw any of my posts the last two days) I totally agree with you, The issue is not with the number, its with the censorship, I posted more about it on this blog i created. But please, tell me what you think, I want to organize this movement. I think we have the people and the willingness, But right now we don't have a place to talk outside of digg, I'm interested it hear what you think. Read my blog and give me your thoughts.

I have to disagree with you somewhat Nova. It wasn't because digg users are idiots, and it's not because the digg admins were just trying to filter out additional articles on the key. The digg admins were removing every article about the key. The spam of articles came as a protest. I think if digg would have left one article up the spamming would not have happened. For example Reddit, left the article alone and they did not have this problem.
